Should You Invest in a Tankless Water Heater?

September 25, 2018adminBlog

Tankless Water Heater Information in New Castle, DE

Hot water on demand is one of the top benefits of modern-day plumbing. As modern technologies have emerged, you may be wondering whether you should make the switch to a tankless water heater. The best time to consider a tankless water heater is when it is time to replace your traditional model or install a brand-new unit. At Budget Rooter, we offer support and servicing for both types of water heaters. We know the pros and cons of each and can help you decide based on your water heating needs and usage. No matter

Traditional water heaters

Traditional water heaters actively store 30 to 50 gallons of preheated water. When the water is used for a shower, bath, laundry, or cleaning the kitchen, the water is replenished and again preheated for future use.

Tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters heat up cool water from your plumbing system and provide hot water on demand using an electric or gas heat source. No heated water is stored for future use. When warm or hot water is needed throughout the house, the heating mechanism turns on and heats just what is needed.

Pros and cons of traditional water heaters

Pros:

  • The initial installation of a traditional water heater is far less expensive than a tankless water heater. The price difference can be as much as 50%, depending on the size of your home.
  • Because traditional water heaters are simpler mechanically, they are easier to service and maintain.

Cons:

  • Because the unit is constantly refilling and heating a set amount of water every time water is used, it can increase your utility bill. At times, water is stored and unused, but it is still being kept warm.
  • Traditional water heaters are large, cannot be stored outdoors, and take away potential storage space.
  • While a larger tank will store more hot water, there’s always a chance you use more water than is in the tank and must wait for more water to be heated.
  • Traditional water heaters typically last only 10 to 15 years, needing to be replaced more often than tankless water heaters.

Pros and cons of tankless water heaters

Pros:

  • Tankless water heaters will save you money if your household does not use a lot of hot water. On average, you can save between 10 to 20% on your utility bill.
  • The heating mechanism of a tankless water heater is small compared to a traditional unit and can even be mounted to an outside wall, saving you precious space in a basement or storage area.
  • Tankless water heaters generally last up to 20 years, almost double the life of traditional water heaters.
  • Typical tankless units deliver up to 2 to 3 gallons of hot water per minute on-demand.

Cons:

  • The initial installation cost of a tankless water heater is considerably higher than a traditional water heater.
  • If you are transferring from a traditional system to a tankless system, making the necessary changes can increase the upfront cost.
